When planning the food for your event, you don't want to fix way too much food and risk having too many leftovers. You also want to make sure that you'll enough food to feed everyone. So how do you find a happy medium? How do you know what the perfect amount of food is to make for your event? Use the following ideas to help you:

Drinks

In general, people tend to drink 3-4 glasses in 2-3 hours. Think about how long your event is as you plan for drinks.

Appetizers

The amount of appetizers to have available depends on whether or not you'll be serving dinner. If dinner is part of your event, you should plan on about four servings of appetizers per person per hour. If you will not be serving dinner, you should plan on serving six appetizers per person per hour.

Main Meal

When it comes to the main meal, you should plan on serving the following amount of each dish per person:

  • 2 ounces of side dishes, such as pasta, beans, or rice
  • 4-5 ounces of vegetables
  • 1 ounce of salad
  • 6-8 ounces of meat, fish, or poultry

You can serve things like bread, nuts, or pretzels to help supplement the meals and keep people feeling full.

Desserts

For desserts, you should plan on one serving per person. If you're going to serve ice cream, have about five ounces available for each person in attendance. As a general rule of thumb for dessert and other dishes, it's better to round up and offer more choices so people will eat less of each dish.
